Year 9 Options

What will I study?

In Year 9 pupils on the Vocational Sport pathway will complete a Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby foundation course. This course includes topics such as Anatomy and physiology, training methods and fitness testing and diet. The course gives pupils the knowledge to complete either a BTEC Sport level 2 or a NCFE V-cert Health and Fitness Level 2.

Pupils on the vocational pathway will begin either the V-cert or BTEC at the start of year 10, this structure and flexibility ensures that pupils are placed on the most suitable course maximising enjoyment and results.

This qualification shows learners how to:

  • Understand and identify the main body systems and their functions
  • Understand the principles of training and fitness
  • Explore how physical activities effect the body in the short and long-term
  • Understand how relevant fitness tests can be used for specific health and skill components of fitness
  • Understand different lifestyle analysis tools and how to apply them
  • Create a health and fitness programme

How Will I Earn Marks For My Final Grade?

60% of the grade is earned through a piece of coursework:

  • Understand the impact of lifestyle on health and fitness
  • Understand how to test and develop components of fitness
  • Understand how to apply health and fitness analyses and set goals
  • Understand the structure of a health and fitness programme and how to prepare safely

40% of the grade is earned through an exam at the end of the course:

    • Understand the structure and function of body systems and how they apply to health and fitness
    • Understand the effects of health and fitness activities on the body
    • Understand health and fitness and the components of fitness
    • Understand the principles of training

How Will This Subject Help Me In The Future?

Success within the Vocational Sport course will enable pupils to continue with further education either at sixth form or college through BTEC Sport Level 3 which is equivalent to A Level.

This then allows a pathway for pupils to either continue to study at university or progress into the world of work through the vast employability skills that BTEC

Sport helps to develop. Studying Vocational Sport can lead to careers in teaching, coaching, managing, officiating, fitness training, sports marketing and leisure management.
