What is the coursework?
The topic is set in the context of approximately 100 years, there is no overlap of content with the exam topics. All three components together cover a chronological range of at least 200 years.

What will I study?
Besides gaining knowledge, studying history can help you develop a range of skills that are relevant to many different careers. They include:
- investigation and research techniques – collecting evidence and assessing how reliable, relevant or biased it may be
- analysing situations and events; identifying causes and effects
- the management and presentation of information
- the ability to argue a case
- writing skills
- the ability to think critically and form considered opinions on the basis of the evidence available.

Academic researchers and lecturers at universities and other institutions of higher education- extending our knowledge and understanding of history. Such historians publish their work, which is mainly used by other academics. As this work generally involves teaching students, it could also be listed under ‘communicating and sharing history’, below. A degree in history could also be useful for working as a researcher in film or TV for factual history programmes or period dramas.
Law and government – jobs in the Civil Service, local government and law make use of the skills you gain through studying history, and people working at senior levels in these areas of work can be involved in decisions that shape our future society. Perhaps you might even consider entering politics, where an understanding of the past is helpful in developing effective policies for the future and you could even be involved in making history yourself!
Heritage work – involves the management, maintenance and preservation of historical buildings and sites. This is often combined with the development and management of tourism at those sites. Heritage work includes jobs with organisations such as English Heritage, Historic England and the National Trust. Opportunities for employment in these fields vary enormously, as do the qualifications needed for entry, which range from practical skills to postgraduate qualifications.
Do I Need A History GCSE?
This is not a requirement, but you do need to have achieved a high pass in English.
How Will I Be Assessed?
You will sit two exams, one per topic. You will also need to complete a piece of coursework on a topic of your choice.
