What will I study?

We start the course by developing our acting skills and developing our understanding of key Drama terminology in preparation for the assessed components.

We will experiment with many dramatic techniques and drama skills before devising a short play and looking at short extracts of texts.

We will then move onto completing component 2, 3 and then finally 1.

Component 2:

This is a practical component in which students are assessed on their ability to create and develop ideas to communicate meaning for performance, apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in live performance and analyse and evaluate their own work.

They will be given a range of stimuli which will help them to generate their initial ideas and then developing and refining their play. They will perform to an audience and then analyse and evaluate the process /final performance. This is completed in year 10 and is teacher assessed then moderated by AQA.

Component 3:

This component is a practical component in which students are assessed on their ability to apply theatrical skills to realise artistic intentions in live performance. Students will study and perform 2 extracts from 1 play. Plays and groups are decided depending on the cohort and the individuals strengths. This is assessed between January and March of year 11 and is externally assessed by a visiting examiner from the exam board.

Component 1: Understanding Drama

This component is a written exam in which students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding of how drama and theatre is developed and performed, including in connection to a set play and on their ability to analyse and evaluate the live theatre work of others.

The exam is split into 3 sections:

Section A: Theatre roles and terminology (4 multiple choice questions)

Section B: Study of set text. We study the play Blood Brothers by Willy Russell (4 questions)

Section C: Live theatre production (1 question)
