What will I study?
Applied Science BTEC is the equivalent of 1.5 A levels so has a big draw on UCAS points. It is a well-respected qualification that is accepted by many employers and Russel group universities.

Laboratory Scientist.
The course contains many mandatory practicals. You will acquire a range of laboratory skills across all the science disciplines and this will include analysis of compounds, production of compounds, calibrating equipment, and experience of a range of scientific analytical techniques.
These skills would be very advantageous if you were considering large industries where there is a significant amount of analytical science work eg Severn Trent, DERFA, hospital analytical services and the HSE.
Safety Management
Working safely is a key feature of the course content and students learn how safety systems are managed in labs and this crosses over into other industries where risk assessment and communication systems are key.
Health Sciences (Nursing and Healthcare)
Optional units covering the physiology of human body systems and disease, coupled with the firm grounding in scientific thinking, theory and techniques make this course an ideal stepping stone into live science careers.
Eg Nursing, Health care, Animal Care (vet nurse)
How Will I Be Assessed?
BTEC is vocational course with 2 optional coursework elements. There are only two externally assessed units. A-Level follows an examination only route.
What GCSE Grades In Science Will I Need?
Ideally students will need good grades (5 or above) in English, Maths and Science although students also need to be well motivated, organised, and able to manage deadlines.
