This is a brand new subject launched in 2021-22 and would complement students taking criminology, psychology or sociology as these would provide a well-rounded synoptic route into social sciences.

Linked Careers
Being a lawyer involves advising clients on criminal and civil law and representing them in legal proceedings. Types of lawyer include:
- Divorce Lawyer
- Criminal Lawyer
- Intellectual Property Lawyer
- Family Lawyer
Responsibilities include:
- Attending court hearings (and doing the preparation beforehand)
- Drawing up contracts and other legal documents
- Negotiating (not all cases will end up in court)
- Explaining the law and giving general legal advice
- Settling disputes and supervising any agreements
- Researching and gathering evidence
- Analysing legal documents
- Supervising Legal Assistants.
Once qualified, solicitors often specialise in one legal area such as family, litigation, property or tax. Solicitors working in commercial law firms advise large corporate clients on transactions or cases. They might draft the contracts for the construction of a new shopping centre or advise on the merger of one FTSE 100 company with another.
High street solicitors advise smaller companies and individuals on legal matters such as writing wills, property conveyancing, custody cases, divorce settlements and so on.
Typical duties include:
- giving legal advice
- researching cases and legislation
- drafting legal documents
- liaising with clients and other professionals such as barristers
- representing clients in court.
It is a responsible and trustworthy job which necessitates integrity, confidentiality and a non-prejudicial manner.
Barristers are legal professionals who provide advocacy and legal advice to solicitors and other clients. Solicitors are the first port of call for members of the public requiring legal advice. If a court appearance is required, the individual will then be referred to a barrister who will provide court representation and specialist counsel depending on the nature of the case.
Typical work duties include:
- providing expert legal advice to solicitors and lay clients
- researching and preparing cases and writing legal documents
- liaising with other legal professionals such as solicitors
- representing clients and putting forward a case in their defence in court
- cross-examining witnesses, studying evidence and drawing conclusions
- negotiating settlements between the client and other parties
What Skills Are Needed?
- excellent academic ability and an aptitude for applying legal theory to practice in court
- strong presentation and advocacy skills
- the ability to present a point of view convincingly
- ability to absorb, understand and analyse large amounts of information
- quick-wittedness, self-awareness and excellent persuasion skills
- strong interest in how the law works and a willingness to stay abreast of current affairs in the profession
- self motivation and dedication to the legal process
- the ability to handle pressure, long hours, and strict deadline
