Year 9 Options

What will I study?

The new reformed GCSE in Design and Technology offers you the opportunity to learn about new and emerging technologies in the real world, smart materials, electronic systems and programmable components, mechanical components and devices and materials.

You will also take on a specialist area of your choice including one of the following areas: Natural and manufactured timber, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, thermosetting polymers and thermoplastics, paper and boards and textiles. Whatever your interest, it can be accommodated under one of these headings.

Why Choose Design Technology?

In the first 2 years of the 3 year course, pupils will gain experience using materials and machinery to gain experience of what the materials can do and if you like working with them.

Some pupils find brazing metal extremely exciting whilst others may wish to develop skills in making wood joints or CAD/CAM.

 

How Will I Earn Marks For My Final Grade?

  • NEA – Non Examined Assessment – 50% of the qualification
  • Approximately 35 hours of candidates work
  • Design and make tasks from a contextual challenge set by WJEC
  • Exam – 50%

How Will This Subject Help Me In The Future?

This course will give you a wide range of practical skills and understanding. You will develop logical thinking skills and will be taught how to solve problems, which is ever present in all aspects of life.

You will be gaining skills that can help with employability and if interested in any form of engineering, then this is the course for you.
