What will I study?

Let’s face it, you live in a world of technology and you know how to use it. Why would you need to learn about it? Computer Science is not about using your computer; it is focused on how your computer works.

For example, you will study what the Central Processing Unit actually does and learn how to develop new computer programs by writing code, you will understand how networks function and improve your skills in problem solving.

Why Choose Computer Science?

The main aim of this course is to develop knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science. You will:

  • Develop and apply computational thinking skills to analyse problems and design solutions across a range of contexts
  • Gain practical experience of designing, writing, and testing computer programs that accomplish specific goals
  • Develop the ability to reason, explain and evaluate computing solutions
  • Develop awareness of current and emerging trends in computing technologies
  • Develop awareness of the impact of computing on individuals, society and the environment, including ethical, legal and ownership issues
  • Communicate computer science concepts and explain computational solutions clearly and concisely using appropriate terminology.

 

How Will I Earn Marks For My Final Grade?

During the course you will study in preparation for a formal examination, worth 75% of your marks, at the end of year 11. However, there will also be a Controlled Assessment, worth 25%, which will take into account practical work you do throughout the course.

How Will This Subject Help Me In The Future?

More and more people are now confident users of computers but somebody has to create the software and design the systems that we all use.

From online shopping to creating games, designing databases to producing Computer Generated Images in movies; these are the job opportunities of the future.
